Join us for a four-week online discussion on WhatsApp to explore how media can better inform and protect communities during emergencies, like the Ebola epidemic. With lessons from past outbreaks, we will discuss key facts on Ebola, community engagement, managing fear, ethical reporting, fact checking, and effective radio programs and media coverage to keep communities safe.

We will be joined by Dr Samson Arzoaquoi, a highly respected Liberian medical professional who worked with media, civil society organizations, and local communities to promote accurate public health information and strong community engagement during the Liberian Ebola outbreak from 2014 to 2016. And by Jefferson Massah, a journalist and media development practitioner, who reported during the Ebola outbreak in Liberia between 2014 and 2016.

Week 1: Introductions and important facts about Ebola

Week 2: Community engagement and managing fear

Week 3: Ethical reporting and fact-checking

Week 4: Designing effective radio programs and episodes during an emergency

Climate-related hazards such as floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, and heat waves are becoming more frequent and severe in many regions, highlighting the need for effective early warning systems that enable communities to prepare for and respond to impending hazards. Broadcasters play a critical role in translating technical forecasts and early warning information into action that communities can take. Through timely and accurate programming, you have built the trust of your community, which can be used to increase risk awareness, encourage preparedness, and prompt protective actions before hazards occur. Join Edwin Igenge, specialist in climate services, early warning, and anticipatory action, to learn about Anticipatory Action, the role of radio, and how to produce clear, accurate, and actionable radio content that supports preparedness and early action.

This Master Class will share key tips for transforming your radio content into effective social media posts to promote your program, growing your audience and increasing engagement on multiple platforms. Learn from Luganda David Nsiyonna and Stephanie Coucopoulos, social media specialists at Green Africa Youth Organization and Farm Radio International, respectively, who have been effectively engaging audiences, youth in particular, on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other platforms. This training event will include strategies for effective messaging on social media platforms and tips on how to use key platforms, like Canva, for designing images and videos. There will also be an opportunity to put these lessons into practice and receive feedback.

Social media is a great way to connect with your audience and reach new audiences. It's important to be on the platforms that are most popular with your target audience and to create posts that will attract engagement: views, comments, likes, and shares. Social media can be used to inform your audience of upcoming topics, collect opinions and stories from audience members, and share clips or programs that have been aired to reach additional listeners. Join us in this Master Class to learn more about how to get the most engagement on social media.
